Haiku

Haiku is a popular form of poetry that appeared in the sixteenth century in Japan. It's a contemplative poetry that usually honors nature. It draws contrasts and surprises readers. Usually it has 3 lines and 17 syllables, distributed in lines of 5, 7, and 5. It usually refers to a moment, sensation, impression or drama of a specific fact or nature. It's almost like a photo of some specific moment of nature.

Limerick

A limerick is a five-line poem, with lines 1, 2 and 5 containing 3 beats and rhyming, and lines 3 and 4 having two beats and rhyming. Limericks are meant to be funny. The last line of a good limerick contains the PUNCH LINE or "heart of the joke."

A flea and a fly in a flue

Were caught, so what could they do?

Said the fly, "Let us flee."

"Let us fly," said the flea.

So they flew through a flaw in the flue.

Acrostic Poems

These poems use the letters of your name to begin each line of poetry.  Rhyming is not necessary, but a strong rhythm makes for a better poem.

Example for John Smith –

Joyful to be alive

One unique individual

Honorable father of five

Not noted to be a poet

Sonnet

A 14-line verse form usually having one of several conventional rhyme schemes. An Italian sonnet is split into two parts, an octave and a sestet. The octave is composed of two envelope quatrains rhyming "abba abba" (Italian octave). The sestet's rhyme pattern varies, though it is most often either "cde cde" (Italian sestet) or "cdc dcd" (Sicilian sestet). The turn occurs at the end of the octave and is developed and closed in the sestet.

Example

An Italian sonnet

My Mother
by Melissa McDowell, 7th grade

My mother is very special to me

I will never forget these things about her

There for me no matter what might occur

For mother of the year, she's my honoree

Even though her life is never low-key

If I need advice, to her I can refer

I feel so lucky to have a mom like her

One who tries to make my life so carefree

With my mom I feel a special bind

It has been there since a long time ago

It won't go away for as long as I live

My mom is definitely one of a kind

I want to tell her; I want her to know

I appreciate all the love that she gives

Free Verse

Free verse  is a style of poetry that is based on cadences that are more irregular than those of traditional poetic meter. While traditional poetic forms are based on fixed stress-patterns and syllable counts, free verse is not constrained to use a fixed number of syllables for each line, and distributes its stress accents in irregular patterns. Free verse may or may not use rhyme. When it is used, it tends to follow a looser pattern than would be expected in formal verse.

My Poetry
by De Anna Jarrel, 8th grade

Poetry to me

Is not a matter of

Inspiration

Or ideas

Poetry is a way of

Life

In my youth

I have many questions

My poetry asks them

I have many passions

My poetry expresses them

I have many fears

My poetry shows them

I have many stories

My poetry tells them

I have many songs

My poetry sings them

My poetry breathes life

Into the words

And feelings

Floating around in my head

My poetry is beautiful

Because it is mine.
